I have been reading a few websites maintained by foreign students in Cuernavaca, and their photos and posts about their experiences have helped me to clarify a few things within my own mind. Based on what I see of the lifestyle of other language students in Cuerna and my own experience of studying in Chile I’ve made some resolutions about how I want to live over there.
The most important of these is a commitment to prioritise spending time with Mexicans over hanging out with other foreigners. When you’re alone in a new place it’s so easy to fall in with the people with whom you have most in common. I’d rather (and if I’m to get the most out of this I must) make a big effort to find local people that I get along with as quickly as possible.
This is going to be easier, I think, thanks to this website. I’ve already made contact with a few ‘cuernavaqueños’ through Couchsurfing (being security-conscious, of course!) and look forward to meeting them. I expect that Rotaract will also be a great way to get in touch with young, community minded people. Nacho, their contact person, has been very enthusiastic about my arrival.
Twenty-one days to go!
